The North Maine Fire Protection District recently acquired a piece of steel from the remains of the World Trade Center and officially unveiled it during a solemn memorial service held on Sunday. This event marked the 10th anniversary of one of the darkest days in U.S. history—a day forever etched in our collective memory as the worst act of terrorism ever witnessed on American soil. The artifact now forms an integral part of the district’s existing 9/11 memorial located within the Ridgewood Cemetery along Milwaukee Avenue.
The memorial itself is a serene space that includes granite benches encircling a tranquil lake, offering visitors a place for quiet contemplation. The addition of the steel fragment adds a poignant touch, serving as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made and lives lost on that fateful day.
