From legacy.com:
Hey everyone,
I just heard about Greg Melyon passing away and wanted to share some thoughts since I know he meant a lot to so many people. Greg was truly one of a kind, and it’s hard to put into words how much he touched those around him during his life.
He was born on March 20, 1962, to Henry and Alice (Simala) Melyon, growing up in the Calumet Region. Greg graduated from Bishop Noll Institute back in 1980 and remained a proud lifelong resident of the area. His career in firefighting started when he joined the Gary, Indiana Fire Department—a path that followed in his family’s footsteps, as he was a second-generation firefighter.
Greg was part of something special when Squad 2 was formed in Gary—a team that became known nationwide for their expertise in handling high-stakes emergencies. It wasn’t just about the calls they ran; it was about the dedication and skill they brought to every situation. When 9/11 happened, Greg didn’t hesitate to step up and join other firefighters heading to New York to help. That’s who he was—always ready to lend a hand or lead the way when others needed it most.
Over the course of his 27-year career, Greg worked his way up through the ranks until he became Chief of Operations for the City of Gary. Even after retirement, he stayed connected to the world of firefighting as a training instructor at BP Whiting Refinery. His passion for safety and emergency preparedness never wavered—it was clear he wanted to pass on everything he’d learned to the next generation.
But Greg wasn’t just about work. He loved photography, especially capturing images of fire trucks and other emergency vehicles. Collecting memorabilia related to firefighting was another big hobby of his. Outside of that, he had a wanderlust that took him all over the place, always eager to explore new places and savor local foods. There’s no doubt Greg lived life to the fullest.
Greg is survived by his wife Donna, his brother Dan (and Ellen), and his brother Mark (with Gerardette). He leaves behind countless nieces, nephews, and friends who will deeply miss him. Private funeral services have been arranged, but there’s no visitation. If you want to honor Greg’s memory, consider donating to the Fire Museum of Greater Chicago—it’s a cause close to his heart.
Rest easy, Greg. You’ll be missed more than words can say.
Take care,
