Greg was also the proud uncle to numerous nieces and nephews, and fondly remembered as a brother-in-law to Paul “Otis†Klapak and the late Frank (Janet) Lowry. His loyal companion, Guinness Melyon, was always by his side.
The family has arranged for private funeral services, and there will be no public visitation. Those wishing to express their condolences can do so online at www.baranfh.com.
Born on March 20, 1962, to Henry and Alice (Simala) Melyon, Greg spent his entire life in the Calumet Region. A proud alumnus of Bishop Noll Institute, graduating in 1980, he remained deeply connected to his roots throughout his life. Greg was a devoted member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Whiting.
His career in firefighting spanned over two decades, beginning with the Gary, Indiana Fire Department. As part of the elite Squad 2, Greg was among the select few firefighters chosen to handle high-risk emergencies. This team became renowned nationwide for their rapid response and exceptional skills. When tragedy struck on September 11, 2001, Greg answered the call alongside fellow firefighters, lending critical assistance to the FDNY. Over time, he climbed the ranks within the department, eventually retiring as Chief of Operations after 27 years of unwavering service.
Following his retirement from the fire department, Greg transitioned into teaching at the BP Whiting Refinery. Here, he shared his wealth of knowledge on safety protocols and emergency response techniques, inspiring countless colleagues. Greg’s contributions to the firefighting community were further recognized through his active involvement with organizations like the IAFF Local 359, the 5-11 Club of Chicago, and the Fire Buffs of Illinois. Additionally, he co-founded the Fire Museum of Greater Chicago, where his love for preserving firefighting history flourished.
Beyond his professional achievements, Greg had a passion for photography and collecting items related to fire apparatus. He amassed an impressive collection of photographs, memorabilia, and die-cast emergency vehicles, reflecting his lifelong fascination with firefighting culture. An adventurous spirit, Greg traveled extensively and relished exploring local cuisines around the world.
Greg’s absence leaves a void that cannot be filled. Friends and family alike will miss his warmth, humor, and generosity.
