South Africa: Looking forward to more energy cooperation with China

With the two major events of the World Cup and the World Expo, South Africa, a resource-rich country, is actively demonstrating to the world the advantages of South Africa and looks forward to more cooperation with China in areas such as energy to advance its industrial and trade development.
Rob Davis, Minister of Trade and Industry of South Africa, who recently conducted trade and investment promotion activities in China, revealed that South Africa is expected to sign a joint venture agreement with China for a coal-to-oil project.
South Africa is actively promoting the final signing of its most important petrochemical company, Sasol, and China on a coal-to-oil conversion project. South Africa does not have a wealth of oil resources, so most of its petroleum products are derived from coal. South African Sasol, the South African petrochemical giant, has the most cutting-edge technology in converting coal into oil, gasoline and other chemicals. According to Rob Davis, the project is located in Ningxia with a total investment of 8 billion to 10 billion U.S. dollars. The China Shenhua Group, which has cooperated with it, has recently completed its first investment in coal-to-oil conversion. Davis this time led a trade delegation of more than 30 senior executives to come to China to launch a two-month trade and investment promotion campaign with the help of the Shanghai World Expo platform. One of the important missions is to promote the above agreement.
Through these two major events, the World Cup and the World Expo, South Africa is actively demonstrating to the world the advantages of South Africa and advancing its industrial and trade development. This point can be seen from the theme of “The Rise of a Modern Economic Power - Time Has Come”, the theme of the South Africa Pavilion of the Shanghai World Expo. The South African Pavilion general representative and South African Consul General in Shanghai Kumar said: “While South Africa has now become China’s largest trading partner in Africa, and the total trade volume accounts for one-fifth of the entire African region, we still hope to further promote foreign investment. ”
At the same time, a group of South African companies, including South Africa's Rainbow Mining, Anglo American, DTC and others, are also very active in developing their businesses in China and are trying to find better partners.
At present, China's cooperation with South Africa is mainly in the mineral and metal fields. South Africa is known for its rich mineral resources and it has a significant share in both world production and reserves. South African mining companies dominate the global market. In South Africa's GDP, the mining industry accounts for 5%. South Africa is the world’s largest producer of gold and platinum and one of the leading producers of base metals and coal.
When energy is rapidly becoming an increasingly important industry in the global context, the advantage of South Africa is obvious: South Africa’s energy industry accounts for 15% of all GDP. Seventy-five percent of South Africa’s energy needs are met by electricity. In fact, with its huge coal reserves, South Africa can provide very cheap electricity compared to international standards. South Africa's synthetic fuels, small oil fields and natural gas industries are all well-developed. Coal accounts for 75% of South Africa’s primary energy consumption. Most of it is used for power generation, and a large amount of coal is used in the synthetic fuel and petrochemical industries.
As the world actively promotes energy-saving and emission reduction, South Africa has begun to lay out its own characteristics for the rich coal resources in the country.
Because of the high dependence of coal mining on capital investment expenditures and the high costs of complying with coal-related environmental regulations, South Africa has been investigating the possibility of replacing coal with natural gas since 2000. At the same time, as a large coal energy country, South Africa has begun to focus on improving energy efficiency and developing clean energy.
South Africa has promised to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 34% by 2020 and increase it to 42% by 2025.
Nuclear power does not occupy a dominant position in South Africa, accounting for only about 3% of total energy, but it is being considered as a potential alternative energy source for energy and coal in the future. As a leading African country in the field of nuclear technology, South Africa is a member of the IAEA Board of Governors.
In 2008, South Africa launched its first commercial wind farm in Darling, Western Cape. There is growing interest in wind power generation and more wind farms are currently under construction. The fact that there is sufficient sunlight in Africa has prompted people to invest in and use solar energy facilities, especially in the face of the power crisis in South Africa.
Rob Davis said: "We realize that environmental protection is a very important topic now. Therefore, we will increase our efforts to save energy and improve the efficiency of energy use. At the same time, we will adopt green methods and methods in the production process to enable the industry. The development is more environmentally friendly and greener. We also very much welcome potential Chinese partners to be able to look at the development of related industries in South Africa and to seize opportunities for future cooperation."
