It was another busy day for the Antioch Fire Department yesterday when they responded to a structure fire on Birchwood Avenue. The call came in around 2:30 PM for a fully involved detached garage at 208 Birchwood. The fire quickly spread to a nearby camper and a boat parked in the driveway, resulting in total losses for both structures. Mutual aid was requested and promptly arrived from neighboring stations in Fox Lake, Lake Villa, and Round Lake to assist with the extensive firefighting efforts.
The initial attack was handled by Antioch Engine 211, a 2000 Alexis model mounted on an American LaFrance chassis, which was positioned on a hydrant to supply critical water to the scene. Meanwhile, Antioch Truck 211, a 2000 ALexis/American LaFrance/LTI tower ladder, also played a crucial role in managing the situation from above. The department’s older but reliable 1983 Pirsch tanker, capable of carrying 2,500 gallons of water, was on hand to provide additional resources. Additionally, Antioch Tender 211, a more recent acquisition from 2004, equipped with 3,000 gallons of water, was deployed to ensure the firefighting operation had enough water supply.
As the blaze was brought under control, firefighters used the Quad 2 Rehab unit to take a much-needed break, enjoying some food and hydration after their strenuous efforts. Squad 2195, built in 1996 by Alexis, was also dispatched to the scene, bringing essential equipment and supplies for the investigators who would later analyze the cause of the fire. Photos taken by Jeff Rudolph capture the intense moments as firefighters navigated through the remnants of the garage and assessed the damage to the adjacent camper.
Upon investigation, it appears the fire may have been caused by an electrical issue, though further analysis is needed to confirm this. For now, the community can be grateful that no injuries were reported, thanks to the quick response and effective teamwork of the Antioch Fire Department and its mutual aid partners. This incident once again highlights the dedication and resourcefulness of local first responders in handling emergencies efficiently.
