The North Palos Fire Protection District responded to a fire that broke out at a Chinese restaurant located at the intersection of 113th Street and Harlem Avenue in Worth around noon on Sunday. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the entire building fully ablaze. According to a report in the Chicago Tribune, the incident occurred around 12:48 PM, and the restaurant, measuring 30 by 60 feet, was entirely consumed by flames. Chief Dan Russell of North Palos mentioned that due to severe structural damage and partial collapse, firefighters had no choice but to operate from defensive positions outside the building.
I happened to be near the scene and captured several images of the dramatic event. One of the photos shows a towering ladder from the Chicago Ridge Fire Department alongside an aerial unit from North Palos. Both vehicles used elevated master streams to combat the intense fire that raged on New Year’s Day. Another image highlights the Canton Express restaurant, which occupied the end unit of a strip mall at 113th Place and Harlem Avenue in Worth. A subsequent photo reveals North Palos Engine 823 positioned on 113th Place. You can see part of the restaurant's outer wall collapsed during the fire—a stark reminder of the devastation caused.
In another shot, North Palos firefighters are seen directing a hose into the structure to extinguish lingering hotspots. Mutual aid was provided by Roberts Park, whose Truck 31 arrived on the scene. A picture featuring North Palos Truck 804 parked in front of the restaurant further captures the scale of the operation. Additionally, the MABAS Division 21 Rehab Unit from Bridgeview was present to support the exhausted firefighters.
For those interested in more visuals, I have compiled a comprehensive gallery that you can view [here](#). This collection offers a closer look at the extent of the fire and the efforts made to control it. It was certainly a harrowing experience for everyone involved, and these images serve as a testament to the bravery and professionalism of the first responders who worked tirelessly to mitigate the situation.
