Winthrop Harbor Fire Department is located along the shores of Lake Michigan in the northeastern corner of MABAS Division 4 near the Wisconsin border. Their fire station, which is integrated into the municipal building alongside the police department, houses an impressive array of nine pieces of equipment within its four-bay garage. One of the few all-Seagrave departments in Illinois, they maintain a fleet that includes two engines and a 75-foot Meanstick quint. With a rich history rooted in Front Wheel Drive (FWD) vehicles, they adorned their modern Seagrave units with FWD logos as a nod to their past. Interestingly, all their equipment, excluding the ambulances, is painted white.
One of their most cherished assets is a meticulously restored 1949 FWD fire engine, which serves as a highlight in local parades. This classic piece of firefighting history even traveled to Clintonville, Wisconsin, for the Seagrave 125th anniversary celebration. The vibrant presence of this vintage vehicle was captured beautifully in several photographs, including one where it was proudly displayed during the festivities. Another image offers a closer look at the officer’s side of the restored engine, showcasing its detailed restoration and historical significance.
A nostalgic photo from the 1970s provides a glimpse into the department's earlier fleet. Taken by Bill Friedrich, this image features not only the 1949 and 1952 FWD engines but also a variety of other vehicles that once formed part of the department's operational lineup. Among these are a 1966 Dodge/Welch mini pumper, a 1963 900 Series American LaFrance engine, a 1973 P-Series Seagrave engine, and a 1974 Ford/Welch squad unit. Each vehicle reflects the evolution of firefighting technology and the department's commitment to serving the community over the decades.
The history of Winthrop Harbor Fire Department is a testament to their dedication and adaptability. As they continue to serve their area with state-of-the-art equipment, they also honor their past through the preservation of these historic vehicles, ensuring that their legacy remains alive for future generations to appreciate.
