Box Alarm fire in Wheeling, 7-10-20

Friday afternoon (7/10/20), around 4 PM, a fire was confirmed at a mobile home located at 15 Brougham Drive in Wheeling. Local firefighters and nearby mutual aid companies were quickly dispatched to the scene. As police officers arrived, they confirmed the fire and noted that the smoke from the burning mobile home was visible for miles across the Whippletree Village mobile home community, which is situated near McHenry Road. Upon arrival, the first responding engine company found a mobile home fully engulfed in flames. The fire had already spread to the adjacent units on both sides. Initial reports suggested that there might have been two children trapped inside, but these reports turned out to be incorrect. The fire department immediately initiated a defensive attack strategy. Both Wheeling fire engines had their hoses operational, while mutual aid companies provided additional manpower to assist in managing the situation. The intense heat made it challenging for crews to control the fire, which ultimately destroyed the original building and caused significant damage to the neighboring units, rendering them uninhabitable. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of firefighters from Wheeling, along with support from Prospect Heights, Buffalo Grove, Northbrook, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Long Grove, Schaumburg, Palatine, Palatine Rural, Rolling Meadows, Lake Forest, and Lake Zurich, the fire was eventually brought under control. Attached are several images captured by Larry Shapiro, showcasing the severity of the blaze and the diligent efforts of the firefighters. These photos depict the use of 2 1/2-inch hand lines to combat the fire, highlighting the scale of the operation required to extinguish such an intense blaze. The fire department remains grateful for the swift response and collaboration from all involved agencies. Despite the challenges posed by high ambient temperatures and the rapid spread of the fire, the combined efforts ensured that no lives were lost. However, the community has suffered a considerable loss, with several families displaced due to the extensive damage. Below are some additional images from the scene, offering a closer look at the firefighting efforts: [Insert gallery thumbnails here] The dedication and teamwork displayed by all emergency responders were instrumental in managing this crisis. Residents are advised to remain cautious as investigations into the cause of the fire continue. Our thoughts are with those affected by this incident, and we hope for a swift recovery for everyone involved. [Show slideshow]
