Box Alarm fire in Wheeling, 7-10-20

On a Friday afternoon (July 10th, 2020), just before 4 PM, the Wheeling Fire Department along with several neighboring auto-aid companies were dispatched to a confirmed fire at 15 Brougham Drive. Eyewitnesses reported seeing thick plumes of smoke rising from a burning mobile home located within the Whippletree Village mobile home community off McHenry Road in Wheeling. As police officers arrived to confirm the fire, they noted that the flames were so intense that the fire could be seen from miles away. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a mobile home fully engulfed in flames, with the fire rapidly spreading to the adjacent units on either side. Initial reports suggested that there might have been two children trapped inside, but those reports turned out to be false. The first engine company on the scene immediately initiated a defensive attack strategy. Both of Wheeling’s fire engines were quickly deployed, and additional resources from surrounding departments provided crucial manpower support. The fire spread quickly, affecting not only the initial mobile home but also causing significant damage to the neighboring units. By the time the flames were under control, the original structure had been completely destroyed, while the adjacent buildings sustained severe damage, rendering them uninhabitable. High ambient temperatures made firefighting efforts even more challenging for the crews working tirelessly on site. Firefighters from multiple jurisdictions came together to assist in containing the blaze. Teams from Prospect Heights, Buffalo Grove, Northbrook, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Long Grove, Schaumburg, Palatine, Palatine Rural, Rolling Meadows, Lake Forest, and Lake Zurich joined forces with Wheeling firefighters to ensure the fire did not escalate further. Their coordinated efforts played a critical role in preventing the situation from worsening. Attached below are several images captured by Larry Shapiro during the incident. These photos provide a glimpse into the intensity of the fire and the dedication of the emergency responders who worked diligently to protect lives and property. [Image captions describing the photos would go here] The collaborative response from various fire departments highlights the importance of mutual aid agreements and the spirit of cooperation among local agencies when faced with emergencies. While the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, the quick action of first responders undoubtedly prevented more extensive damage and potential loss of life. Residents of the Whippletree Village community are grateful for the hard work and professionalism exhibited by all involved in this challenging situation.
