I just got back from covering the fire that broke out at 1610 North Wells on August 26, 2015. It was quite an intense scene to witness, and I managed to capture some photos that really tell the story of what happened. These images were taken by my friend Adam Koscielski, who was there with me to document everything.
The first shot shows Chicago's Squad 1 arriving at the scene. You can see the firefighters hard at work, their focus evident as they tackle the blaze. The smoke is thick, but you can still make out the determination on their faces. This image really captures the urgency of the situation and how quickly these professionals spring into action when needed.
In another photo, we get a clearer view of the smoke billowing from the roof of the burning building. It’s almost surreal how the gray clouds of smoke dominate the skyline, contrasting sharply against the blue sky above. From this angle, you can really appreciate the scale of the fire and the effort required to bring it under control.
One of my favorite shots is the one showing the overall fire scene. It’s chaotic yet mesmerizing, with firefighters moving about, hoses stretched across the ground, and equipment scattered around. The intensity of the moment is palpable, and it’s clear that every second counts in situations like these.
There’s also a close-up of the flames licking at the building, which highlights just how dangerous and unpredictable fires can be. The heat radiating from the structure is almost visible in the photograph, emphasizing the bravery of those fighting the fire.
Finally, one last image gives us a broader perspective of the aftermath. While the fire has been mostly contained, there’s still cleanup and recovery work ahead. It’s a reminder of both the destructive power of fire and the resilience of the community that comes together to support each other during such crises.
