Early on Sunday afternoon, just before 1 PM, the North Palos Fire Protection District responded to a fire that had broken out at a Chinese restaurant located at the intersection of 113th and Harlem in Worth. By the time emergency responders arrived, the building was already heavily engulfed in flames. The Chicago Tribune covered the incident, noting that firefighters from North Palos were dispatched around 12:48 PM to the Canton Express restaurant at 113th Street and Harlem Avenue.
According to North Palos Fire Chief Dan Russell, the structure, measuring 30 by 60 feet, was completely ablaze when they arrived. Due to the severe structural damage and partial collapse, firefighters had no choice but to operate defensively from outside the building. This posed additional challenges as they worked to contain and eventually extinguish the fire.
Local photographer Tim Olk captured several images from the scene, offering a glimpse into the intensity of the situation. One particularly striking image shows a tower ladder from the nearby Chicago Ridge Fire Department alongside a North Palos aerial unit, both utilizing elevated master streams to combat the roaring flames. Another photograph highlights the extent of the damage, revealing the partial collapse of the exterior walls as firefighters worked diligently to extinguish lingering hotspots.
The Canton Express restaurant, nestled at the end of a strip mall on 113th Place and Harlem Avenue, suffered extensive damage. Firefighters positioned North Palos Engine 823 on 113th Place, where remnants of the collapsed exterior wall could still be seen. Additional photos showcase the efforts of North Palos firefighters directing a hand line into the smoldering remains, ensuring every last ember was doused.
Mutual aid was quickly called upon as well. Roberts Park dispatched Truck 31 to assist, while the MABAS Division 21 Rehab Unit from Bridgeview also arrived on the scene to support the exhausted firefighters. Even with reinforcements, the task was immense, requiring hours of effort to fully control the inferno.

The images not only document the devastation but also highlight the incredible work done by local firefighters under challenging circumstances. This fire serves as a stark reminder of the bravery and dedication required in such situations, with first responders going above and beyond to protect the community.
