The Wheeling Fire Department got a call about a fire in a house located at 40 Versailles Court just before 8:30 PM on Wednesday evening (January 26, 2022). The initial response included Glencoe Squad 30, Des Plaines Engine 61, Buffalo Grove Tower 25, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD Battalion 51, Mount Prospect Battalion 3, Arlington Heights Ambulance 2, Wheeling Squad 24, and both Wheeling ambulances. However, all of Wheeling's other companies, including their chief officers, were already busy dealing with another house fire in neighboring Prospect Heights, just over a mile away. Units from Prospect Heights would have been scheduled to respond alongside Wheeling’s forces if they hadn't already been occupied.
As the fire in Prospect Heights was nearing its end, command at that scene released a Wheeling engine, Wheeling chief officers, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Squad 51 to handle the fire in Wheeling. Squad 24 was the first to arrive and initially reported no visible signs of fire. But after approaching the home on foot, they noticed heavy smoke filling the house and managed to locate the hydrant in the cul-de-sac. The incident was then upgraded to a Working Fire, which brought additional resources including Mount Prospect Engine 14 and North Maine Engine 1, along with Wheeling Battalion 24, who had finished their operations at the Prospect Heights incident.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the fire originated in the basement and was quickly brought under control. However, the flames had spread upwards and caused damage on the first floor, posing risks for interior crews. The entire house was heavily smoke-filled, necessitating ventilation efforts.
