Titanium Native Mineral Processing Plant Example - Sorell Concentrator (Canada)

Sorel (Sorel) beneficiation plant near Montreal, Canada, is a Quebec Iron Titanium (Quebee Iron & Titanium Corp., referred to QIT). The company is the only company in Canada that processes and processes ilmenite.

The ore is sourced from the company's Lac-Tio mine in the Lad Lake region of Quebec. The mine is one of the largest ilmenite deposits in the world, with reserves exceeding 100 million tons. The mine was commissioned in 1950 and is open-pit mining. The mined ore is crushed and crushed in situ, and then the Sichuan Railway and the waterway are transported to the company's plant in Sorell for beneficiation and smelting to produce high-titanium slag containing 70-72% of TiO 2 and high-purity pig iron. Kind of product.

When the plant was put into operation in 1950, the ore was crushed and directly smelted in an electric arc furnace. However, due to the high fluctuation of ore grade and high sulfur content, the titanium slag contains up to 0.6% sulfur. In order to provide uniform material for the electric arc furnace, a concentrator was built in 1956. By 1972, the annual processing capacity of raw ore was 2 million tons, and the annual output of sorghum and raw titanium reached 820,000 tons and 570,000 tons respectively. 80-90% of the company's high-titanium slag is exported to more than 50 countries. High-purity pig iron is mainly exported to the United States, and the rest is exported to Western Europe and sold.

The ore is a mixed mineral of massive ilmenite and hematite in a ratio of 2:1. Gangue minerals are feldspar, pyroxene addition to a small, biotite and pyrite. The ore contains an average of 35% TiO 2 and contains 40% Fe. The hematite in the ore is finely embedded in ilmenite and cannot be separated by beneficiation. Pyrite is distributed between the ilmenite and hematite grains, with an average sulfur content of 0.3%. The iron and titanium oxides in the ore are 86% on average, and the ore density is 4.4 to 4.9 g/cm 3 . The chemical composition of the ore is shown in Table 1.

The process flow of the Sorell plant is shown in Figure 1. The ore was first crushed to -9.5 mm and then sieved using a 1.5 x 4.3 m terracotta shaker. The +1.2 mm fraction is 85% and is sent to a heavy medium cyclone using magnetite as a medium for sorting. -1.2 mm was concentrated and de-mixed and sorted using a Humphrey spiral concentrator.

The ore content of the heavy medium beneficiation part is 89% on average, and is increased to 94% after sorting. The iron ore content of the iron ore dressing is 75%, and is increased to 91.5 after sorting. %. The iron and titanium oxide content of the mixed concentrates was 93% on average, including 36.8% of TiO 2 and 41.8% of Fe. When the output of the concentrate is 150-200 tons, the recovery rate is about 90%. The composition of high titanium slag produced by the plant is shown in Table 2.
