Function Description:
A ball valve is a type of quarter-turn valve that uses a hollow, perforated, and pivoting ball—often referred to as a "floating ball"—to control the flow of fluid through it. When the ball's hole aligns with the flow, the valve is open; when it is rotated 90 degrees by the handle, it is closed. The handle typically lies flat in alignment with the flow when open and becomes perpendicular when closed, making it easy to visually confirm the valve’s status.
Ball valves are known for their durability and reliability, performing well after many cycles and maintaining a secure seal even after long periods of inactivity. This makes them an excellent choice for shutoff applications, where they are often preferred over gate and globe valves. However, they are not ideal for throttling applications due to their limited ability to regulate flow precisely.
