Just before 2:00 PM on Thursday, April 22, 2021, multiple fire departments from Long Grove, Buffalo Grove, Palatine, Lake Zurich, Prospect Heights, Mundelein, Countryside, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Barrington, and Elk Grove Township were called to a house fire at 3159 Cuba Road in Long Grove. Initial reports indicated that the homeowner was trying to put out a fire on the roof. The 6,000-square-foot home, featuring a cedar shake roof, is located approximately 1,000 feet from the road, accessible via a winding driveway and a wooden bridge.
Upon arrival, responding units were informed by dispatch that the homeowner had briefly re-entered the house but was outside again when crews arrived. Firefighters from Long Grove observed flames coming from both the front and rear of the attic during their initial size-up. The incident was escalated to a working fire, prompting additional resources, including several tankers.
An interior attack was launched, but heavy fire forced firefighters to retreat and switch to a defensive strategy. Long Grove Tanker 55, carrying 3,000 gallons of water, and Squad 55 with 730 gallons, were positioned in the driveway. Shortly after, Lake Zurich Engine 324 arrived with an additional 750 gallons of water, having laid 750 feet of 5-inch hose up the driveway.
The alarm was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm, then to a second and finally a third alarm. A deck gun was used to combat the fire until the initial 4,800-gallon combined water supply ran low. Additional companies established a water supply from the street, while tankers shuttled water from two fill sites—one to the east and one to the west.
At one point, explosions of ammunition inside the home were heard, and embers spread to the east, igniting small brush fires. Due to strong winds, the fire spread rapidly and completely destroyed the house.
