On Tuesday, we shared the news about the addition of the **Darien-Woodridge Fire District** to our site. Among the apparatus featured at Station 2 was an unusual and historically significant antique fire engine. Jack Connors has generously provided us with details about this rare piece of firefighting history, along with some great photos.
The engine in question is a **1949 Oshkosh/Howe** pumper, equipped with a 1,000-GPM pump and a 1,200-gallon water tank. It rides on an **Oshkosh Model W-2201** chassis, serial number **3541**, and the **Howe** unit carries the serial number **HR-10-7961**. This model is a classic example of early post-war fire apparatus, built during a time when fire departments were transitioning from horse-drawn units to motorized equipment.
The engine had a long and varied career before ending up in the Darien-Woodridge Fire District. It first served at the **Argonne National Laboratory** in Argonne, Illinois. After that, it was transferred to **Grandview Park**, which was later annexed by **Oak Lawn**. Eventually, it found its way to the **Belmont Fire District**, which later merged into the **Darien-Woodridge Fire District**.
Today, the engine bears the **Darien-Woodridge Fire District** emblem on the side, but the original **Belmont Fire Protection District** lettering remains on the front. It's a fascinating relic that tells the story of several communities and their evolving firefighting needs over the decades. Thanks to Jack Connors, we can now share this piece of history with our readers.

The engine currently has a Darien-Woodridge Fire District decal replacing the Belmont Fire Protection District name on the door. The Belmont name still resides on the hood. Jack Connors collection
