The General Office of the People's Government of Hubei Province recently issued a document stipulating that within the range of one kilometer from the highest water level of the Three Gorges Reservoir area and other key ecological areas, it is strictly prohibited to engage in agricultural activities such as planting vegetables and flowers with high chemical fertilizer intensity.
In addition to the Three Gorges reservoir area, key ecological areas in Hubei Province include the South-to-North Water Transfer, Shennongjia, Qingjiang, Sihu, Honghu and Liangzi Lake. By 2012, the province will focus on the ecological construction in these areas and give priority to the construction of a number of rural sewage treatment demonstration projects.
According to briefings, in recent years, the rural environment in Hubei Province is facing a grim situation. Domestic pollution and industrial pollution are superimposed. Rural drinking water safety and the quality and safety of agricultural products are seriously threatened. In this regard, the provincial government also requested that by 2012, to basically solve the problem of drinking water safety in rural areas, rural sanitary toilet penetration rate of 68% or more.
