The York Center Fire Protection District, located within MABAS Division 12, spans an area of five square miles. It serves several unincorporated regions including Villa Park, Lombard, and Oak Brook, along with parts of Oak Brook Terrace and the village of York Center itself. This district operates out of a single fire station, staffed by two full-time firefighters and around 68 part-time personnel who work diligently to keep their community safe.
When it comes to their firefighting vehicles, the York Center FPD maintains a diverse fleet. Their primary engine is an E-ONE Hush pumper featuring a rear-mounted engine design. They also have a Pierce pumper, a heavy-duty rescue vehicle, multiple Medtec ambulances, and a US Tanker unit constructed on a Freightliner M2112 chassis. Each piece of equipment plays a critical role in ensuring that the department can respond effectively to any emergency situation.
Historically, the entire fleet was painted in a distinctive combination of white and lime green hues. One notable example from this era is the 1993 E-ONE rear-engine HUSH model. This particular vehicle boasts an enclosed, top-mounted operator’s console shielded by its extended vista cab. Equipped with a powerful 1,500-gallon-per-minute (GPM) pump and a 750-gallon water tank, it remains part of the current fleet today—though the original lime green has since been repainted in a more traditional red shade. Photos from Larry Shapiro's collection highlight the vehicle's evolution over time.
Another significant addition to the fleet is the US Tanker tender, identified by the model number TN76-LS. This tanker unit stands as a testament to modern firefighting technology while maintaining the department’s commitment to efficiency and safety. Its robust build and versatile capabilities make it indispensable during large-scale incidents requiring additional water supply or logistical support.
In recent years, the district has continued to update its branding and operational strategies. New decals and insignias, such as the one showcased in the image labeled “YRKC_R77_decal,†reflect these changes. These updates not only enhance visual recognition but also underscore the organization’s dedication to professionalism and innovation.
Overall, the York Center Fire Protection District exemplifies how smaller communities can achieve exceptional levels of service through careful planning, resourcefulness, and teamwork. With each piece of equipment playing a vital role, they ensure that residents receive prompt assistance whenever needed. As new challenges arise, it’s clear that this department will adapt and grow alongside its ever-evolving mission.
