New Policy Helps Retarders Promote Tejia to Face Market Expansion

The domestic passenger car retarder market is expected to enter the accelerated growth stage. Ling Zhaowei, the general manager of the company, recently disclosed that the Ministry of Construction has completed the formulation of the classification standard for urban bus passengers and is expected to be submitted to the State Council for approval in the near future and formally introduced before the end of the year. As the national standard, the new standard first proposed that an auxiliary braking system should be deployed on passenger cars above 8.5 meters.

According to reports, the auxiliary brake system for urban public transport buses is mainly eddy current retarder, which is also the main product of Terjia. The company's market share of domestic eddy current retarder reached 48% in 2008. The eddy current retarder principle is equivalent to installing a "generator" on the drive shaft. When it is not energized, there is no contact and no wear. When the brake is required, the circuit is connected and the drive shaft is subject to the resistance of the electromagnetic field to achieve the purpose of braking. When the car is decelerating or down the long slope, the retarder is used to smoothly reduce the speed, reduce the wear of the brake pads, and avoid the casualties caused by brake failure.

However, for a long time, due to the unit price of the retarder being nearly 10,000 yuan, the initial one-time investment was too high, which led many domestic enterprises to be unwilling to match, which greatly restricted the development of the retarder industry. In Europe where public safety requirements are high, retarders must be installed on trucks with more than 8 passengers and trucks with a load of over 10 tons. Previously, in China, only the "Classification and Assessment of Classes of Passenger Cars" promulgated by the Ministry of Communications stipulated that mid-to-high-class passenger cars of medium-high and medium-size passenger cars must have retarders installed in the middle-high, high-level, and high-class passenger cars. However, this is only a requirement for high-class buses. General buses do not have mandatory regulations.

Ling Zhaowei said that the national standard for buses only proposes that “supplied” auxiliary braking systems should be installed. This is not a mandatory requirement and therefore the impact on the company is also difficult to grasp. However, some people in the industry believe that although not a mandatory requirement, it was first proposed in national standards and will undoubtedly accelerate the promotion of the bus market for eddy current retarders.

According to incomplete statistics, the sales volume of China's automobile retarder was 16,000 units in 2004. This number increased to 23,000 units in 2005, reached 30,000 units in 2006, and exceeded 50,000 units in 2007. In 2008, China's retarder market has grown substantially compared with the previous year, with the largest increase in the sales of retarders for large and medium-sized passenger cars. The relevant agencies predict that in 2012, the domestic car retarder market will reach more than 160,000 units.
